2nd International Workshop on the Syntax of Predication and Modification

Meeting Description

As a sequel to the successful International Workshop on the Syntax of Predication and Modification 2024, the Hungarian Research Centre for Linguistics will host the 2nd International Workshop on the Syntax of Predication and Modification (IWSPM2025) in Budapest, Hungary, on 1–2 September 2025. IWSPM2025 will be an in-person-only event. Like its predecessor, this workshop seeks to foster fruitful dialogue between researchers through syntactic analyses of construction types involving predication and modification, from a wide range of languages and analytical perspectives.

Questions Central to the Workshop

  • What are the syntactic configurations for predication and modification?
  • Can the syntactic configurations for predication and modification be unified? If not, what is it that necessitates syntactic differentiation between predication and modification?
  • Is there synchronic cross-linguistic variation in the syntax of predication and modification? If so, what is this syntactic variation rooted in?
  • Is there a diachronic evolution of the syntax of predication and modification? If so, what has enabled the syntax of predication and modification to evolve in this way/these ways?

Keynote Speakers

  • senior invited speaker: Hideki Kishimoto (Kobe University, Japan)
  • junior invited speaker: Andrea Szávó (University of Debrecen, Hungary)

Call for Papers

For IWSPM2025, we invite submissions of abstracts for 25-minute presentations (followed by 10-minute discussion) on any topic in the syntax of predication and modification and/or its interface with semantics. We especially welcome submissions addressing questions from a formal syntactic perspective. Abstracts should not identify the author, and may not exceed two pages (A4 with 2.5 cm margins or US letter with 1 inch margins on all sides), including examples, references and tables/figures. Fonts should be no smaller than 12-point Times New Roman. The top of the first page should include the title of the paper and, on a separate text line, up to 5 keywords. Abstracts should be submitted in PDF via the workshop E-mail address: iwspm2025@nytud.hun-ren.hu.
